Oakland's Inner City Youth Having Fun Vaulting

Welcome to the Oakland Vaulters

Gymnastic vaulting on horseback is a team sport that offers many opportunities for learning, physical training and competition. In vaulting, youth of varying ages and sizes help each other on and off a moving horse. Teamwork is essential and vaulting's benefits include: the establishment of trust, self confidence, cooperation, leadership, sharing, mentoring and other valuable life skills.

Prior riding, gymnastics, dance or vaulting experience is not required. Scholarships are available for Oakland’s inner-city youth.

MEPS' Oakland Vaulters program operates from Sequoia Arena, sponsored by the longtime Oakland equestrian organization Metropolitan Horsemen’s Association (http://www.mhaoakland.org). As the program takes off, MEPS will run the program at other venues as well. The Preservation Society would like to see the program have a permanent home at City Stables. Presently City Stables has not been reopened for equestrian use.

MEPS launched the Oakland Vaulters Program May 9, 2007. Two-thirds of their vaulting students are on full scholarship. MEPS is actively fundraising to expand the program due to popular demand.
